Inaugural Global Camino 2021

The Way to St James Inaugural Global Pilgrimage was successfully completed with over 360+ participants taking part all around the world. You can see all the photos and videos at our Facebook Event, The Way to St James Inaugural Global Camino 2021.

From South Africa to Sweden, Tasmania to Canada and the USA to the UK, and everywhere in between, pilgrims walked in sunshine, clouds, snow and rain, braving extreme heat or sub-zero temperatures. They walked in forests, on mountains, through cities and suburbs, by rivers and highways - all united in peace and solidarity, walking as one Camino family across the globe.

We owe the success of this Inaugural Global Camino to you, our pilgrim friends, who accepted the invitation to join us. You have so generously shared your photos, stories, reflections and memories with us, and you have supported each other with positive comments and messages of support. We thank you all for embracing this unique event so enthusiastically!

We hope that this will be the first of many Way to St James Global Caminos. We also hope that some of you will consider coming down to Tasmania in the future to join us in person for our Way to St James Cygnet Pilgrimage sometime in the future.

As those of you who have completed the Camino de Santiago know, the real Camino starts now! We wish you every blessing for the year ahead and for your ongoing Camino of life.

Buen Camino!

Inaugural Global Camino Details

The Way to St James Pilgrimage Committee reluctantly decided not to proceed with the usual pilgrimage in January 2021 because of the current pandemic. However, we have embarked on a voyage of discovery to find a virtual means to engage in the Way to St James experience. We have created a Facebook Event, The Way to St James Global Camino 2021 on Saturday January 9th and Sunday January 10th. Join pilgrims all over the world walking in solidarity and community, connecting with nature and the spiritual dimensions of their life.

Hints for Walking Safely

Always carry water, warm clothing and some extra food in case of unexpected delays. Wear clothing appropriate for the climate. Wear sturdy shoes. Thongs and sandals really aren’t suitable footwear for bush walking. Wearing enclosed footwear will help to prevent injury from sharp sticks and rocks.

Weather conditions can change rapidly in many places so consider carrying a spray jacket and always carry at least one bottle of water. Use personal insect repellent and sunscreen if necessary. Consider taking some first-aid supplies with you. Check with your own area information for weather, track conditions and wildlife.

Do not rely on your mobile phone in the event of an emergency. Many places have limited mobile reception. Let someone know where you are going to be walking and how long you think you will take.
